The Northern Energy program, funded by Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC), provides financial support to Northern Ontario businesses with renewable energy projects. There are two available streams of funding. Funding for small business through the Northern Energy program is available as forgivable performance loans or conditional contributions.
Renewable Energy Planning
This Ontario government funding for business stream provides financial assistance to businesses and partnerships in Northern Ontario that have large-scale projects to develop renewable energy. Funding under this stream can contribute to costs associated with engineering and design costs, as well as, environmental studies.
- Amount: Maximum contribution to any one alternative planning project will generally not exceed 50 per cent of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $100,000. Total government assistance for all projects should normally not exceed 75 per cent of total project costs.

- Eligibility: Northern Ontario Businesses or partnerships involved in developing renewable energy
Internal Energy Generation
This government funding Ontario stream is open to businesses with a project to implement an internal renewable energy source.
- Amount: Maximum contribution to any one internal energy generation project will generally not exceed 50 per cent of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $250,000. Total government assistance for all projects should normally not exceed 75 per cent of total project costs.
- Timeline: Open
