Grants for Small Business Eligibility: NOHFC – Business Expansion Projects

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) has released the NOHFC Business Expansion Projects funding program to help businesses grow, increase their revenue and create new jobs.  Ontario small business grants offered through this program will support up to 50% of project costs to a maximum of $1 million.

NOHFC Government Small Business Grants: Company Eligibility

Companies that are located in Northern Ontario are eligible to apply for this government small business grants program if they are involved in one of the priority areas of the NOHFC:

  • Advanced manufacturing
  • Agriculture, aquaculture and food processing
  • Arts, culture and creative industries
  • Digital economy
  • Forestry and value-added forestry-related industries
  • Health sciences
  • Minerals sector and mining supply and services
  • Renewable energy and services
  • Tourism
  • Transportation, aviation and aerospace
  • Water technologies and services

Ontario Business Grants through NOHFC: Eligible Costs

The following capital costs associated with the expansion of a business are eligible for business grants Ontario under this program:

  • Capital construction
  • Leasehold improvements
  • New or used equipment
  • Training costs incurred with third parties
  • Land servicing costs
  • Information & communications technology investments including, but not limited to, software

NOHFC Business Grants in Ontario: Ineligible Costs

The Business Expansion Projects funding is focused on capital costs and therefore the following costs are not eligible for reimbursement:

  • Business plans
  • Strategic plans
  • Marketing
  • Feasibility studies
  • Research and development
  • Land purchase/lease
  • Rolling stock (e.g. cars & trucks)
  • Project management costs
  • Consulting costs
  • Maintenance costs
  • Administration costs
  • Mineral exploration, mine development costs and milling operations
  • Working capital
  • Inventory
  • ICT service providers (e.g. cellular and internet service providers)
  • Other ongoing operating costs

NOHFC Small Business Government Grants: Ineligible Companies

Businesses involved in the following areas are not eligible for business grants in Ontario funding:

  • Retail and professionals services
  • Accommodation and food
  • Electricity generation
