Science Horizons Youth Internship Program: Hire an Environmental Science Graduate

Environment Canada is preparing for the 2012-2013 round of funding for their Science Horizons Youth Internship Program (SHYIP). Funding allocation will be announced in January, allowing more companies to partner with environmental science graduates in order to advance their research and development initiatives, while providing youth with a viable environment to develop their skills and knowledge.

The program was announced in 1997 as part of the Youth Employment Strategy and its success has allowed the SHYIP to help develop partnerships between post-secondary graduates and Canadian businesses for over 10 years. The funding program covers up to $12,000 of the candidate’s salary over the project. Projects tend to last approximately 6 months.

Eligibility Factors for SHYIP Canadian Hiring Incentive

There are specific criteria that both the candidate and organization have to meet in order to be eligible for this program. The candidate must have a degree or diploma from a post-secondary university or college but not currently attending school, are not in receipt of EI throughout the internship, and be 30 years of age or younger.

Key Areas of Study

The program will take the subject of your project into consideration. There are a few key areas of study that SHYIP will focus its funding on:

  • Atmosphere
  • Water
  • Wildlife & Landscape
  • Science Strategies
