Northern Energy – NOHFC Ontario Government Funding

The Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation’s (NOHFC) Northern Energy program is designed to help eligible northern organizations and businesses pursue clean renewable energy generation capacity that will reduce their demand on external energy sources. Additionally, this Canadian government funding program will motivate clients to invest in renewable energy generation projects in Northern Ontario. This program will provide funding for small business deemed eligible in one of the two sub-programs:

  1. Renewable Energy Planning: Businesses and not-for-profit organizations involved in the energy sector that intend to create renewable energy projects are eligible for this government funding for small business. Applicants must demonstrate that they have the capacity to bring the capital project forward. Businesses will only be considered one project at a time.
  2. Internal Energy Generation: Businesses and not-for-profit organizations that intend to establish energy generation systems for their own use and that reduce demand on external energy sources are eligible for Ontario government funding. The project must generate energy from a renewable energy source. Funding assistance is provided for capital equipment costs and for its installation. The program’s intent is to reduce the client’s demand on external power sources and the applicant must demonstrate energy and financial savings resulting from the project.

Ontario Government Funding Assistance

Funding assistance will be in the form of a loan or conditional contributions. Under the first sub-program, the maximum contribution from the government to a project will not exceed 50% of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $100,000. In the second sub-program, the maximum contribution will not exceed 50% of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $250,000 in funding for small business. Total government assistance should not exceed 75% of total project costs.
