Build in Canada Innovation Program Supports Mail Security Solutions

The Government of Canada has awarded a $526,003 contract to support a new, innovative security solution. RaySecur International Inc. has developed a new device that can detect suspicious substances, powders, and liquids sent through packages in the mail. This groundbreaking technology will help ensure the safety of anyone receiving mail across the globe.

The contract has been awarded through the Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP), which helps innovators test and sell pre-revenue technologies to the Government of Canada. The program is designed to help move state-of-the-art products from the testing phase to the marketplace. BCIP is provides up to $500,000 for standard innovations and up to $1,000,000 for military innovations.

The purpose of this technology is to improve mail security solutions at an international level and improve the safety of individuals handling and receiving packages. Dangerous substances that pass through mailrooms, such as Fentanyl, are a current concern that can be addressed with this new, innovative examination equipment.

BCIP Contract Awarded to RaySecur International Inc.

In November 2017, the Government of Canada awarded over $500k to support RaySecur International Inc.’s MailSecur device. The technology is a real-time 360-degree imaging system used for mail security screenings. Some of the key benefits that the MailSecur device will provide, include:

  • Safe and accessible detection of powders, solids, liquids and all forms chemical, biological, radiological, and explosive composites (CBREs) that can be found inside envelopes and small packets;
  • Transportable light-weight design; and
  • Real-time inspection capabilities that drastically reduce inspection time compared to X-ray and handheld inspections.

Thanks to the BCIP program, the innovation will be tested at the Canada Border Services Agency, Correctional Service Canada, and Global Affairs Canada.

“This technology is an accurate, safe, cost-effective and user-friendly threat detection system that will transform mail screening by making it widely accessible.”
– Éric Giroux, Chief Executive Officer, RaySecur International Inc.

Build in Canada Innovation Program: Canadian Government Contracts

The Build in Canada Innovation Program (BCIP) helps small and mid-sized businesses secure a government department as their first buyer of innovative technologies. Government contracts are awarded to businesses as their initial sale, in addition to testing their technologies with the Government of Canada. By partnering with government and broader public-sector departments, technology developers can collect revenue on a pre-market technology and/or work with a partner to test, refine, and receive feedback.

Through a BCIP contact, eligible applicants can secure up to $500,000 for standard innovations or up to $1,000,000 for military innovations.

To get started with the BCIP program, businesses can submit their pre-commercial innovations for consideration at any time. Applicants are encouraged to identify a technology testing partner in order to accelerate the application process. If you would like to discuss your eligibility for BCIP, please contact Mentor Works.
