Canadian Government Funding for Aerospace and Defence Research

The Canadian Government supports the aerospace, defense, space and security (A&D) industries by providing research and development funding through the Strategic Aerospace and Defense Initiative (SADI). The program offers repayable business funding grants towards the development of next generation products and services related to the A&D industries. Projects involving Collaborative Research and Development are encouraged; especially those that involve a Canadian post-secondary institution. The SADI program aims to accelerate innovation and foster collaboration between A&D institutions and their surrounding Canadian universities and colleges.

Repayable Research and Development Funding

The SADI program provides support through fully-repayable small business funding grants. The funds are considered a conditionally repayable contribution instead of a business loan. Businesses can receive around 30% of the eligible project costs through these conditionally repayable contributions. In most cases, the funding will be repaid by the company through a conditional repayment plan. The actual repayment amounts will depend on a royalty percentage that is derived from the company’s gross business revenues. This program permits the stacking of multiple Canadian Government Grants for Research and Development.

Eligible to Receive Canadian Business Grants

Those eligible to apply must be legally incorporated in Canada, and undertaking a strategic R&D project that relates to the country’s A&D sectors. The program is open to various types of collaborative arrangements, including those that involve post-secondary institutions or research consortiums. SADI does not have a limit regarding project size or funding amounts received; however, contributions are limited to around 30% of the total eligible project costs. This program is available to provide funding for both small businesses and large corporations.
