Fueling Ontario’s Nuclear Renaissance: BWXT’s Expansion

Ontario’s energy landscape is poised for a transformative shift with the announcement that BWX Technologies, Inc. (BWXT) is investing $80 million to expand its nuclear manufacturing plant in Cambridge. This strategic investment signals a significant step forward in Ontario’s commitment to reliable, affordable, and clean energy, while also catalyzing economic growth and job creation across the region.

“Cutting-edge nuclear energy technology from leaders like BWXT will help Ontario to compete on the global economic stage. The 250 good-paying jobs and added production capacity this investment will secure both strengthens our province’s nuclear sector and reinforces our grid’s ability to meet growing energy demand.”

Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade

Embracing Nuclear Energy for Economic Prosperity

Ontario boasts one of the world’s most environmentally friendly electricity systems, drawing from a diverse range of energy sources such as nuclear, hydroelectric, renewables, natural gas, and biomass. Nuclear energy contributes approximately half of Ontario’s electricity supply and has remained a dependable and secure component of the province’s energy grid since the 1960s, offering cost-effective baseload power without emitting harmful pollutants.

The BWXT Cambridge Expansion Project is expected to commence construction in the third quarter of 2024, with an anticipated completion date in early 2026. The Ontario government welcomes BWXT’s expansion as a testament to the province’s dedication to nuclear energy and job creation.

Minister of Energy Todd Smith affirmed that the province would reap positive benefits with global nuclear manufacturers like BWXT expanding their operations in Cambridge and hiring more Ontario workers. The expansion not only strengthens Ontario’s position in the global nuclear industry but also underscores the vital role nuclear energy plays in driving economic prosperity and job growth.

Meeting Future Energy Demands

As Ontario’s electricity demand is projected to double by 2050, the expansion of BWXT’s manufacturing facility assumes paramount importance. The investment not only addresses the need for reliable energy sources but also fosters innovation in clean energy technologies. Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation, and Trade, underscores the significance of BWXT’s investment in strengthening Ontario’s nuclear sector and ensuring energy reliability.

BWXT’s expansion is set to create over 250 new skilled, unionized jobs in Cambridge, providing a significant boost to the local economy. This infusion of jobs not only strengthens the talent pipeline but also ensures a sustainable future for the local workforce.

“As Ontario leads the world in nuclear energy development, our government is proud to support BWXT’s expansion which will create 250 highly-skilled, unionized jobs for local tradespeople. With today’s announcement, our government’s plan continues to deliver better jobs with bigger paychecks to more workers closer to home, generating the talent pipeline of the future.”
